Conquer It With a 5-Station Boot Camp!

The AP Exam season is upon us and the Crunch Time is Real! Students are feeling the pressure, and as educators, we want to provide them with targeted and effective review. Forget about any passive lectures; let’s get those brains working with an engaging, active boot camp! Today, I’m sharing my blueprint for a five station AP Exam Review that is sure to boost confidence and retention.
Why a Station-Based Boot Camp?
- Active Learning: Stations promote movement and engagement, keeping your students focused.
- Targeted Review: Each station can focus on a specific skill or content area.
- Differentiation: You can tailor stations to meet diverse learning needs.
- Collaboration: Stations encourage peer interaction and sharing knowledge in a fun setting.
- Variety: Stations help break up monotony and keeps review days interesting.
The 5-Station Boot Camp Framework
Let’s dive into the specifics! Here’s a sample framework you can adapt to your specific AP subject:
Station 1: Free-Response Frenzy (FRQ Practice)
Practicing free-response questions under timed conditions is a great strategy for helping your students be aware of the time constraints as the AP Exam grows near. You can pre-select past FRQ’s, timers, answer keys, and scoring rubrics. Students move through multiple FRQ’s in the time allotted, and then compare their answers to the provided rubric. This allows them to self-assess and determine where they are losing points.
Another activity is to provide students with several different FRQ’s that cover the same learning objective. Students can work on their assigned FRQ in small groups where everyone is focused on the same topic.
Station 2: Multiple Choice Mayhem (MCQ Mastery)
In this station, the focus will be to strengthen strategies and recall content as well as time-pressure. Students can work through sets of multiple-choice questions in groups focusing on analyzing answer choices and how to eliminate distractors. Whiteboards or butcher paper is a fun addition at this station. Questions can be printed individually on card stock and separated into skill sets for an added focus.
Station 3: Concept Connections (Concept Mapping/Review)
Give students some large colorful paper, sticky notes, markers, reference materials and have the group brainstorm the BIG IDEAS of the course. Students can create concept maps, flowcharts, diagrams, and foldables to reinforce key concepts, rules, and procedures.
Even asking them to specifically answer prompts that relate to how they will justify their knowledge on a specific topic or concept. When student work in a small group, it promotes collaboration and helps students see the big picture.
Station 4: Vocabulary Vortex (Key Term Review)
At this station, students will work to master essential definitions, formulas, rules, theorems, and vocabulary terms. Using flashcards in a Quiz, Quiz, Trade Kagan Strategy is a fast and fun way to think on your feet. Games like “Pictionary” or “Jeopardy” with key terms can make vocabulary review engaging. Students can also create their own “Stuff You Need to Know Cold” study guide.
Station 5: “Ask the Expert” (Teacher Q & A/Review)
Addressing specific student questions and providing targeted support is the main focus at this station. Here students can ask the teacher questions, review challenging concepts, or get personalized feedback. This station allows for individual or small group interaction with the teacher. Students can clarify misconceptions and receive personalized guidance.
